AIMM / USSVI Submarine Research Library

AIMM is pleased to announce a major acquisition of books for the fast-growing AIMM submarine research Library.

These books, covering a wide range of submarine-, naval-, maritime-, and military-related topics have been loaned to the AIMM Library by the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. (USSVI), a major fraternal organization of submarine veterans. USSVI has over 150 chapters with over 10,000 members across the nation.

A total of 68 boxes of books, videotapes, and other materials were received from the estate of Jimmy “Crash” Evans, a USSVI member from Texas. The total number of volumes is not yet known, but is expected to exceed 1,000 titles.

These books will join the approximately 1,000 volumes already cataloged and available for use by scholars, historians, students, and museum visitors. The current collection of books has been received from donors across the nation.

In addition to books on submarine history and the U.S. Submarine Service, the AIMM/USSVI Submarine Research Library has books about German, Russian, British, Canadian, Italian, and French submarines. We also have books about "targets", fiction (for those days when you need something light to read), biographies and autobiographies of submariners and naval leaders, and books about naval history going all the way back to the American Revolution.

The AIMM Website also has a new feature - the Book of the Week. Each week, we will highlight a book, series of books, CD, or DVD from the Library. There is also an archive of past "Books of the Week", so you can catch up on any you miss.

A formal dedication of the library will occur in September, during the 2006 USSVI Convention. Several thousand submarine veterans are expected to attend the week-long event.

The Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum is located on the North Little Rock waterfront at 120 Riverfront Park Drive. The entrance to the parking lot is on Riverfront Drive near Alltel Arena. The museum is open Thursday through Monday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Thursday / Friday / Saturday / Monday) and 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. For additional information, visit the museum’s website at www.aimm.museum or call 501-371-8320.
